Cyprus: 182 Deaths from Drug Overdose (2004-2023), Says AAEK

According to data from the Cyprus National Addictions Authority (AAEK), 182 deaths in Cyprus were attributed to drug overdose between 2004 and 2023. In 2023, 17 cases were recorded, mainly due to stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine.
Marking International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31), AAEK emphasizes the importance of collective action. In the EU, at least 6,500 overdose deaths were recorded in 2023, often due to a combination of substances.
AAEK continues prevention efforts through:
- Substitution therapy: Enhancing access to treatment programs.
- Naloxone availability: Expanding the availability of naloxone and training on its use.
- Harm reduction: Expanding the services of the mobile unit 'CareZone'.
- Combating stigma: Awareness campaigns.
On August 31, Eleftheria Square will be symbolically illuminated, and AAEK officials will inform the public.
