Changes to Red Light Violation Fines in Cyprus: What's New

Significant changes to the enforcement of fines from the photo-monitoring system came into effect on March 6, 2024. The changes introduce a more graduated approach to penalties for red light violations.
According to Police Lieutenant Tasos Asiikkis, the new regulations aim to differentiate the severity of the offense, depending on where the vehicle stops after the stop line.
New fine scale:
- Violation within the pedestrian crossing: The fine is reduced from €300 to €85, with 3 penalty points.
- Entering the intersection: The fine remains at €300 with 3 penalty points. This also applies if the vehicle crosses the white line at intersections without crossings.
- Violation of the mandatory stop line: The fine remains at €25 without penalty points.
Mr. Asiikkis clarified that the new provisions are not retroactive. Violations recorded up to March 5 will be settled under the old regime of €300.
