Police Investigate New Viber Phone Scam

Police are investigating a new case of phone scam via the Viber application.
According to a complaint, scammers are calling unsuspecting citizens with video calls, falsely claiming to be communicating on behalf of the Cyprus Police.
As reported, a victim received a call from abroad, where an unknown man, posing as the Chief of Police, claimed to be conducting immigration and financial fraud checks. The perpetrator persuaded the victim to reveal personal and credit card information.
During the conversation, the perpetrator activated the camera, appearing to be sitting in a chair wearing a police uniform, without revealing his face, while the profile picture was that of the Assistant Chief of Police.
The police urge the public to be especially careful in online interactions and not to disclose personal data to third parties via cyberspace.
