Syllouris and Giovannis Acquitted in 'Al Jazeera' Case

The Nicosia Permanent Criminal Court acquitted the former President of Parliament, Dimitris Syllouris, and former MP, Christakis Giovannis, of charges of influence peddling and conspiracy to defraud in the case known as the 'Al Jazeera' case.
The decision was the result of disagreement among the judges, with the majority ruling that the testimony was not sufficient for a conviction. The charges concerned the naturalizations of Zainé Armous and Nikolai Gornovski.
Dimitris Syllouris stated that he had remained silent for five years and that he is clean. He also referred to the need for the rule of law to combat corruption.
The Attorney General, Giorgos Savvidis, stated that the decision would be studied and a decision would be made on whether to appeal.
