The Nicosia Criminal Court is scheduled to announce its decision on September 11 regarding the sentence of former Commissioner of Volunteerism, Yiannis Yiannakis, who is accused of trafficking forged documents.

His lawyer requested a mitigation of the sentence, citing the 30-year lapse since the commission of the offenses and Mr. Yiannakis' clean criminal record.

Petros Stavrou, Mr. Yiannakis' lawyer, stated that the defendant admitted to three charges on 2/4/2025, which saved court time. He also pointed out that the remaining five charges were dropped.

Mr. Stavrou argued that the delay after 2/4/2025 was due to the Prosecuting Authority. He emphasized that Mr. Yiannakis did not alter the documents himself and that the high school diploma did not serve any purpose.

Letters from the European Commission and UN volunteers regarding Mr. Yiannakis' actions were presented.

Judge Nicol Grigoriou set the announcement of the decision for September 11.
