Tensions Over Stray Cat Feeding in Cyprus – Police Inaction Allegations

The feeding of stray cats in Cyprus has sparked controversy, with animal welfare organizations accusing the police of inaction regarding the destruction of feeding sites. Stella Stylianou, president of Argos Animal Shelter, claims that the police, citing a Legal Service opinion, are avoiding investigating complaints, leaving the animals without food.
Amendment Law 175(I)/2020 stipulates that the destruction of feeding sites constitutes an offense. However, the police appear to limit the legality of feeding only to areas designated by local authorities. This interpretation is causing concern among animal welfare organizations, which report incidents of harassment and attacks against volunteers.
The Cyprus Federation of Animal Welfare Organizations is requesting clarification on the matter from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Legal Service. They warn that weakening feeding programs will lead to an increase in the stray cat population and further problems.
Indicative is the case of a volunteer in the Famagusta District who, despite the care she provides to the cats, faces complaints and intimidation from neighbors, with the police not intervening.
Animal welfare organizations are calling for immediate intervention and understanding between the competent authorities to resolve the issue.
