Sweep Operation in Old Nicosia: Illegalities and Deficiencies Uncovered

Coordinated operations in old Nicosia revealed numerous illegalities in establishments, including sanitary deficiencies, overcrowding, and inadequate fire safety measures. In one year, 18 operations were carried out, resulting in 131 arrests of foreigners for illegal residence and the inspection of 318 establishments.
Four buildings were sealed off by order of the Nicosia Municipality due to unsuitability. Minister Kostas Fytiris stated his determination to continue the operations.
In an operation on February 26, 2025, three apartment buildings were inspected with 39 personal checks and four arrests for illegal stay. Health Services identified serious deficiencies in three buildings and decided to take legal action.
In another operation on May 14, 2025, 31 apartments in 15 apartment buildings were inspected, with Health Services and the Fire Department finding numerous violations. On May 29, 2025, establishments with increased illegal activity were inspected, with two complaints for selling alcoholic beverages.
During an inspection of 42 apartments, 124 foreigners were found, along with numerous sanitary violations. A temporary closure order was issued for two buildings.
Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos emphasized that the campaigns are increasing the sense of security and changing the situation in the city.
