Corruption Investigation into Aircraft Leasing for Firefighting

The process of leasing and maintaining aircraft for firefighting purposes by the Department of Forests may have turned into a field of corruption for years, according to a police investigation.

The Police recommend the criminal prosecution of 14 natural and legal persons allegedly involved in the aircraft leasing process from 2017 onwards. Investigations revealed large sums in bank accounts suggesting kickbacks.

Following a complaint, the Ministry of Agriculture conducted an administrative investigation, which was sent to the Police in January. Investigators examined electronic devices and emails, while the main offenses concern abuse of power, corruption and bribery.

Three officials were suspended and transferred to other departments. The next steps are awaited from the Legal Service.
