The Mayor of Paphos, Phaidonas Phaidonos, is being suspended from his duties following an allegation of rape that allegedly occurred 10 years ago. Simultaneously, the Mayor of Lefkoniko, Pieris Gypsiotis, is also being suspended for a case of domestic violence.

Developments surrounding Phaidonas Phaidonos are rapid after a woman testified to the authorities, claiming she was raped a decade ago. This followed a deposition by businessman Theodoros Aristodimou with the same allegations. The Ministry of Interior requested information from the Police regarding the investigations against the mayor to consider applying Article 113 of the Municipalities Law.

The Chief of Police informed the Ministry of Interior that a case is being investigated against Mr. Phaidonos based on Article 144 of the Penal Code, concerning rape. The Police have a written statement from the alleged victim, given the day before yesterday and lasting over five hours.

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, decided to suspend the two mayors under investigation, according to Article 113 of the Municipalities Law. The decision will be published in the Official Gazette of the Republic.

The investigations into the Mayor of Paphos are being kept under complete secrecy.
