The Nicosia Criminal Court will announce on September 10 the sentences for the five defendants in the case of the murder of Tansou Tsinntan in the Central Prisons. During the hearing, defense attorneys presented arguments for mitigating the sentences.

Ilias Stefanou, lawyer for the two prison guards found guilty of manslaughter by negligence, referred to the personal circumstances of the defendants and their clean criminal record. He pointed out the risks faced by prison guards if they return to the Central Prisons as inmates and raised the issue of inequality, referring to neglect of duty by other prison guards as well.

Ms. Mouzourou, lawyer for the third prison guard, requested a suspended sentence, taking into account his years of service. The lawyers of the other defendants referred to the personal circumstances of their clients and the principle of proportionality.

The representative of the Legal Service, Harris Karaolidou, stated that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against 11 prison guards. The Court ordered the detention of the three prison guards until the announcement of the decision.
