Yiannakis Yiannakis: Acquittal of Charges and Admitted Facts

The case of former Commissioner for Volunteerism, Yiannakis Yiannakis, has resurfaced following his acquittal on five charges. Initially, he faced nine charges, one of which was suspended, while he admitted to the three most serious ones, which carry a prison sentence of up to ten years.
At yesterday's hearing, the representative of the prosecuting authority, Marina Masoura, stated that four witnesses would be accepted. Judge Nicol Grigoriou expressed concern about the failure to summon the disputed witnesses, referring to the prosecution's 'delaying tactics'.
The prosecution decided to suspend the remaining five charges and presented a report of facts regarding the three charges to which Yiannakis pleaded guilty. The hearing was set for August 29, for the speech of the lawyer Petros Stavrou to mitigate the sentence.
According to a publication by Fanis Makridis in Fileleftheros, Yiannakis did not study Civil Engineering but attended courses such as 'Discipline' and 'Psychology of Humor'. He remains an employee of the Cyprus Youth Organization on suspension.
When applying for a position at ONEK in 1995, Yiannakis submitted a fake university degree from San Diego State University. In 1997, he applied for a European Union program with a fake degree and a fake stamp from the US Embassy.
A police investigation in 2021 revealed altered grades on his high school diploma. It was also found that he did not study at San Diego State University.
