Fifty-one years after the assassination of Doros Loizou, the case remains open. In 1974, amidst the chaos of the coup and the Turkish invasion, Doros Loizou was murdered, and Vassos Lyssaridis was targeted in an assassination attempt.

The deadly attack took place on August 30, 1974. Witnesses saw the perpetrators, but the atmosphere was dominated by the influence of the junta and EOKA B. One of the perpetrators allegedly appeared at RIK shortly after the crime, in an attempt to create an alibi.

According to the article, the assassination had a dual purpose: to silence voices of resistance and to provoke bloodshed among Greeks, providing an excuse for further Turkish intervention. Additionally, it aimed to prevent Makarios' return.

Vassos Lyssaridis called for restraint. The assassination of Doros Loizou, according to the article, was a planned move within the framework of betrayal. The perpetrators feared a possible guerrilla formation by Lyssaridis, a fear that also concerned the US, according to classified documents.

To this day, the murderers walk free, due to a systematic cover-up effort. The case remains an open wound for Cyprus.
