The Story of the 'Greek Escobar': From Doorman to Drug Trafficker

The 'Greek Escobar,' Alexandros Angelopoulos, has been arrested in connection with a cocaine trafficking case. The ship 'Ourania A,' with a crew of four Greeks and one Bulgarian, was intercepted in the Atlantic Ocean carrying a load of cocaine.
Angelopoulos, also known as 'Alekos' or 'Khontros,' has been linked to cocaine trafficking and money laundering cases. He started as a doorman in Athens and later became involved in cigarette smuggling.
He then settled in Antwerp, where he became connected to the underworld and involved in drug trafficking. Authorities had been monitoring him since 1999-2000, when the DEA reported his activities in the port of Antwerp.
Angelopoulos was convicted in the case of the fishing vessel 'Africa I' in 2004, which transported 5.4 tons of cocaine. He was released from prison under restrictive conditions but has been arrested again in connection with the new case.
He is expected to be brought before the Piraeus prosecutor today along with four other detainees.
