Cyprus: Cannabis Seizures Surge – 588 kg in 8 Months

The Cyprus Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) has recorded a significant increase in cannabis seizures. In less than eight months, 588 kg of cannabis were seized, approaching the 618 kg seized in the entire year of 2024.
In addition to cannabis, increased amounts of cocaine have also been detected, reaching 39 kg in 2025.
YKAN has adjusted its operations, focusing its efforts on airports (mainly Larnaca), courier companies, and the postal service.
Another worrying phenomenon is the involvement of increasingly younger individuals in drug cases, as well as the increased involvement of students.
According to the commander of YKAN, Christos Andreou, the unit focuses on the entry points of drugs and cooperates with other authorities to identify and arrest traffickers.
This year, in addition to cannabis and cocaine, 1 kg and 486g of cannabis resin, 50 cannabis plants, 542g of methamphetamine, 768g of ecstasy, 2380 packages of THC, 30 tablets of cannabinol (CBN), 679 tablets of tramadol, and various doping substances were also seized.
YKAN also places particular emphasis on prevention, with social intervention officers holding meetings and referring individuals to treatment programs.
