Cyprus: Millions Lost to Online Fraud Schemes

Millions of euros have been lost in Cyprus in the past year due to online fraud. Dozens of Cypriot citizens and companies have fallen victim to schemes using various tactics to extract money and personal data.
According to the police, reports of such scams are daily, but cases are rarely solved. Scammers promise everything from riches to romantic relationships to convince their victims.
Notable cases include fraud through fake cryptocurrency investments, where a man in Paphos lost over 400,000 euros, and the case of an elderly man who was deceived by a supposed WHO doctor through social networks, losing 60,000 euros.
The methods used include misleading emails and phone calls, with various excuses such as tax refunds, unpaid invoices or fines, cryptocurrency investments, and even fake medical expenses.
The police urge citizens to be especially careful and not to disclose personal information or send money to strangers.
