Cyprus: Teacher Sentenced for Sexually Exploiting Student

The Cyprus Court of Appeal has increased the sentence of a teacher convicted of sexually exploiting his student in 2005. A.S. was sentenced to four years in prison without suspension, following an appeal by the Attorney General.
Initially, the Nicosia Criminal Court had imposed a prison sentence of 2.5 years. The Court of Appeal deemed the sentence 'manifestly inadequate' and increased it to 4 years.
A.S., a teacher at a private school, exploited his position and the psychological dependence of the student during private 'dance lessons'. The court recorded a 'methodical, gradual exploitation' of the victim.
The complaint was filed in 2020, fifteen years after the events. The Court of Appeal emphasized that the delay does not diminish the seriousness of the offenses.
The Court of Appeal's decision sends a deterrent message regarding sexual offenses against minors, especially when committed by persons in positions of authority.
