Cyprus: 'Trial Within a Trial' Nears End for Eva Kuenzel

The re-examination of German national Eva Kuenzel, accused of usurping Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories, has concluded at the Nicosia Criminal Court. The 'trial within a trial' examines the circumstances surrounding her arrest.

Final pleadings are expected in July, with the proceedings concluding before September 2025. The defense will call two witnesses for examination on July 7, 9, and 16, 2025.

During the trial, the defendant recognized some handwriting samples as her own, while she was uncertain about others. She refused to name individuals who had handwritten notes on the documents, citing personal data concerns.

Prosecuting Authority representative Anna Matthaiou challenged Kuenzel's claims regarding her poor knowledge of English at the time of her arrest.

The proceedings will continue on July 7, 9, and 16 with the examination of defense witnesses.
