Limassol: Inmate Intubated After Jail Cell Fire

An inmate was seriously injured in a fire that broke out in the holding cells of the Limassol Police Department (ADE). The inmate was intubated and transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where he is being treated in the Burn Unit.
Initially, it was reported that only the inmate from whose cell the fire started suffered respiratory problems. However, two more inmates and four police officers required medical assistance and were discharged.
The fire was brought under control by the Fire Department, which is investigating the causes of the blaze. The inmates were transferred to other holding cells.
Reports indicate that there were 42 inmates in the cells instead of 32, and there were no adequate emergency exits or a sufficient number of fire extinguishers. The inmate from whose cell the fire started had been transferred on Thursday from the Paphos holding cells.
Due to the incident, a police staff recall was issued.
