New Twist in German Real Estate Agent Case: Tension in Court

A new "trial within a trial" may arise in the case of German real estate agent, Eva Isabella Künzel, who is accused of misappropriating Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories. The case is being heard before the Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia.
The proceedings continued after the decision of October 8, in which the Court rejected evidence obtained by the Police, ruling it as a product of violation of the defendant's constitutional rights. Specifically, the search of her luggage and the seizure of items were deemed unconstitutional.
The defendant faces 46 charges, including promoting illegal transactions, illegal use of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories (2023–2024), and money laundering from illegal activities.
The prosecuting authority, represented by Anna Matthaiou, called witness Dimitra Stavrou, Chief Sergeant of the Police Headquarters. Defense attorney Sotiris Argyrou raised an objection, arguing that the testimony was a consequence of the illegal actions of the Police.
Tension escalated when the prosecuting authority attempted to submit Künzel's interrogation statement, requesting that specific questions and answers be deleted. Mr. Argyrou expressed reservations, stating that the testimony was based on documents obtained after her illegal arrest.
The President of the Court, Nikolas Georgiadis, reminded that the decision concerned only the search and seizure, and not the legality of the arrest. The proceedings were rescheduled for October 22.
Until then, the defendant will remain in custody.
