Fines for Tobacco Smuggling at Crossing Points

The Cyprus Department of Customs announced a series of seizures of duty-free tobacco products at the Agios Dometios and Astromeritis-Zodias crossing points between March 5 and March 10, 2026.

On March 5, at Agios Dometios, 5 cartons of cigarettes and 5 cartons of heated cigarettes were seized from a Greek Cypriot woman. On March 6, at the same point, 1 kg of hookah tobacco packages were seized from a Greek Cypriot man. On March 7, at Astromeritis-Zodias, 5 cartons of cigarettes were seized from a Greek Cypriot man.

On March 10, at Agios Dometios, 1 carton of cigarettes, 4 cartons of heated cigarettes, and 250 grams of rolling tobacco were seized from a Greek Cypriot man. Later that day, 1 carton of cigarettes and 8 cartons of heated cigarettes were seized from a Turkish Cypriot man, hidden in the spare tire compartment. Also on the same day, 2 kg of rolling tobacco were seized from an Irish citizen traveling to the United Kingdom via Larnaca Airport.

All those involved were released after paying out-of-court fines ranging from €300 to €700.
