Fines for Cigarettes from Occupied Territories at Agios Dometios

Two incidents of seizure of non-tax-paid tobacco products occurred at the Agios Dometios crossing point on October 26 and 27, 2025.

In the first case, on 26/10/2025, a 59-year-old Romanian woman was arrested for transporting 15 cartons of 200 cigarettes each, 2 cartons of 200 heated cigarettes, and 1.4 kg of tobacco. The products did not bear the necessary markings and traceability codes. She was released after paying a fine of €2500 and €500 for the return of the vehicle.

In the second case, on 27/10/2025, a 63-year-old Syrian man with Cypriot citizenship was arrested for transporting 18 cartons of 200 cigarettes each, 13 cartons of 200 heated cigarettes each, 3 kg of tobacco for rolling cigarettes, and 425 grams of pipe tobacco. Similarly, the products did not bear the legal markings. He was released after paying a fine of €3000 and €500 for the return of the vehicle.

In both cases, the vehicles and tobacco products were initially confiscated by the Customs Department.
