Fines for Cigarette Smuggling from Occupied Territories

The Nicosia District Court imposed a fine of €8,000 on an 80-year-old for repeatedly transporting untaxed cigarettes from the occupied territories. Additionally, a 58-year-old was fined €5,000 for transporting tobacco products.

According to the Department of Customs, on 21/8/2025, officers at the Agios Dometios crossing point selected a taxi carrying an 80-year-old passenger from the occupied areas to Larnaca Airport. 67 cartons of cigarettes and 4 packs were confiscated as they lacked the required health warnings.

On 22/8/2025, members of OPE Famagusta found 57 cartons of cigarettes, 3 packs, and tobacco in a vehicle driven by a 58-year-old. The driver paid an out-of-court fine of €5,000.

On 23/8/2025, at the Agios Dometios crossing point, a man was arrested for smuggling. 50 packs of heated cigarettes and tobacco were confiscated. An additional 28 cartons of cigarettes and tobacco were found at his residence. He was fined €3,500.
