Violence in Cyprus: The Role of Media and Emotional Epidemiology

Neurologist-psychiatrist Dr. Kyriakos Veresies, a professor at Philips University, commented on the surge of violence in Cyprus, linking it to emotional epidemiology. Dr. Veresies emphasized that Mass Media (MM) and Social Media (SM) amplify the atmosphere of violence.

The president of the Cyprus Union of Journalists, Giorgos Fragkos, disagrees with the view of over-promotion of violence in the Cypriot media, pointing out that the phenomenon is more pronounced in online press and social media.

Dr. Veresies highlighted the complex interaction of factors, with the media reproducing negative news to increase viewership. He also pointed out the transfer of crimes from Greece, creating the impression that they are happening in Cyprus. This exposure to violence and tragedy creates a climate of fear and anger.

Referring to the lack of trust in justice, Dr. Veresies stressed that citizens may resort to vigilante justice, undermining the rule of law. Behavior is contagious, and the violence projected can be legitimized by individuals or groups who feel wronged.

Giorgos Fragkos referred to the self-regulation and training of journalists, but also to the low wages that do not help quality journalism.
