David Gilmour's legendary 'Black Strat' guitar has become the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, fetching $14.55 million.

The former Pink Floyd member used the guitar to record classic albums such as 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' (1973), 'Wish You Were Here' (1975), 'Animals' (1977), and 'The Wall' (1979).

The British guitarist played the black Fender Stratocaster on the solo for 'Comfortably Numb' and when he wrote the songs 'Money' and 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'.

The auction was held by Christie's in New York as part of the 'Jim Irsay Collection'. The selling price exceeded the initial estimate of $2-4 million.

The 'Black Strat' surpassed Kurt Cobain's acoustic guitar, which sold for $6 million.
