Spirituality in Art: From Taboo to Trend

Spirituality, once a taboo, has become a trend in the art world. Contemporary artistic practices show a return to the spiritual, with artists like Hilma af Klint and Saya Woolfalk leading the way.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), a pioneer of abstraction, believed she received guidance from higher spiritual entities. Between 1906 and 1915, she created the "Paintings for the Temple" series, combining geometry and symbolism. Her works, with metaphorical color meanings, remained hidden for years.

Saya Woolfalk, a contemporary artist, creates imaginary cultures with a spiritual background. In her exhibition "Empathic Universe," she presents the "Empathics," a fictional tribe of women with their own mythological system.

Both artists seek to depict the invisible, either through spiritual revelation or myth-making, highlighting the need for art to function as a gateway to other realities.
