in.gr presents a tribute to Kostas Varnalis, the ethno-folk bard and spiritual patriarch of Romiosini. Varnalis, who passed away on December 16, 1974, left an indelible mark on Greek literature.

Giorgos Valetas wrote about Varnalis, calling him a 'deep-rooted and multi-branched plane tree.' The life and work of Kostas Varnalis, as the tribute mentions, will occupy study and research for centuries.

Born in 1884 in Pyrgos of Eastern Romylia (now Burgas, Bulgaria), Varnalis studied philology and joined the Dimotiki movement. He worked as a teacher and journalist, while Marxist ideology significantly influenced his work.

Important works include 'The Light That Burns' (1922) and 'Besieged Slaves' (1927), as well as the essay 'Solomos Without Metaphysics' (1925). Varnalis, dedicated to the principles of communism, was exiled in 1935 and awarded the International Lenin Peace Prize in 1959.
