The White Tower of Thessaloniki has become the first Greek monument to be included in the 'Treasures of European Film Culture' by the European Film Academy (EFA).

The inclusion was celebrated at the 66th Thessaloniki Film Festival. The chairman of the EFA board, Mike Downey, emphasized the importance of creating a network of film monuments across Europe.

The White Tower now stands alongside landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain, the Potemkin Stairs, and Ingmar Bergman's Faro Island.

Mr. Downey thanked Eliz Zalandο (General Director of the Thessaloniki Film Festival), Athina Kartalou (General Director of Greek Cinema at EKOME), Anastasios Antonaras (Director of the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki), and Phoebe Oikonomopoulou (producer and partner of Theodoros Angelopoulos).

Eliz Zalandο mentioned that the inclusion of the White Tower has multiple symbolic depths and touches the emotional core of the Festival.

Phoebe Oikonomopoulou emphasized the connection of the White Tower with Theodoros Angelopoulos, stating that Angelopoulos drew creative elements from ancient mythology.
