The iconic Hungarian director Béla Tarr has died at the age of 70. The news was announced by director Bence Fliegauf on behalf of his family.

Béla Tarr was known for his black and white films and long takes. He was a close collaborator of László Krasznahorkai, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Born on July 21, 1955, in the city of Pécs, Hungary. His first feature film, "Family Nest", was created in 1977. In 1988, the film "Damnation" was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, with a screenplay co-written with László Krasznahorkai.

One of his best-known works is "Satantango" (1994), a seven-hour film.

After his last feature film "The Turin Horse" (2011), he retired from cinema and taught filmmaking.
