Wolfgang Bernauer: A Swiss Photographer Captures the Greek Countryside

Swiss photographer Wolfgang Bernauer, a former ophthalmologist, has dedicated years to documenting life in Greek villages. Through his book 'My Greek Village', Bernauer presents images of cafes, churches, and festivals throughout Greece.
Following in the footsteps of Frédéric Boissonnas and Robert McCabe, Bernauer captures the authenticity of the Greek countryside. He spent several weeks in Karpathos and then traveled to places such as Metsovo, Tzoumerka, Phocis, Lefkada, Peloponnese, Lesvos, Symi, Patmos, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Amorgos, and Sifnos.
The book is divided into five sections: cafe, market, hinterland, church, and festival, highlighting the Greek identity. Bernauer focuses on the people and their stories, capturing the atmosphere of village life.
In cafes, grocery stores, and churches, Bernauer discovers the soul of Greece. Journalist Katerina Lymberopoulou emphasizes the importance of the publication, which contributes to preserving the traditional character of the country.
