First Hydrogen Station in Cyprus Receives Permits

The first hydrogen production and refueling station in Cyprus has received the necessary building permits and secured co-financing from Europe. The station will operate in the Aradippou area of Larnaca.
The project, costing €7.5 million, is 60% funded by European funds. It is estimated to produce 150 tons of hydrogen annually, equivalent to approximately 627 tons of diesel.
Despite securing the permits, further procedures and agreements with the state are required, as there are currently no hydrogen vehicles in Cyprus.
The state is considering announcing a subsidy scheme for the purchase of hydrogen vehicles, similar to the schemes for electric vehicles. Priority will be given to the use of hydrogen in transport, with initial application in heavy vehicles and public vehicles.
Experts say that converting conventional cars to hydrogen is not feasible, requiring the import of vehicles with pre-installed hydrogen technology.
The production of green hydrogen can use energy from Renewable Energy Sources (RES), offering an energy storage solution.
In contrast to electric cars, hydrogen vehicles can be refueled directly, reducing waiting time and range anxiety.
