Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Impact on Grain Producers

Foot-and-mouth disease is now affecting grain producers, with serious consequences for the grain market due to restrictions in the 'closed' zones.

Tons of grain are piling up in the fields, as their transport from the contaminated areas is prohibited. Sotiria Georgiadou, Press Representative of Veterinary Services, stated that the grain within three kilometers of the contaminated areas will remain there, while at a distance of ten kilometers it will only be used for the producers' animals.

Farmers are expressing concern about revenue losses, while the crisis threatens the viability of the entire agricultural sector.
