A dramatic appeal for support was made by Andreas Theophanous, honorary president of producers, during protests outside the 'House of Europe,' against a backdrop of tractors and farmer outrage.

Speaking to Omega Channel, Mr. Theophanous stressed that the non-payment of acreage subsidies is leaving thousands of families without the essentials for the Christmas table. Payments were due to be completed by December 15.

'If we are not paid, we will go and spend the holidays outside the Presidential Palace,' he said, warning of escalating measures. He pointed out the increase in the prices of animal feed and fertilizers, describing the changes in the Common Agricultural Policy as a 'tombstone' for Cyprus.

Mr. Theophanous referred to the need to support farmers, as cultivation prevents fires and the desertification of villages.

Despite health problems and a low pension, he remains in the field. 'We are struggling to keep our fathers' fields next to the ceasefire line, but if they don't support us, no farmer will be able to survive,' he said.
