ECB to Change Bank Stress Test Methodology in 2026

The European Central Bank (ECB) announced that in 2026, it will change the methodology of stress tests for banks. The new methodology will emphasize geopolitical risk and will use reverse simulation to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen systemic resilience.

The latest stress tests, the results of which were announced in August, did not incorporate geopolitical risk into their models, nor did they reflect reality in specific areas, such as interest rate reductions or forecasts for the real estate market in Greece.

The new approach aims to address the weaknesses of banks' internal models, which may underestimate losses in adverse scenarios.
