The Statistical Service will implement changes to the way the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is calculated, starting in January 2026. These changes stem from European regulations and the findings of the household budget survey.

The changes focus on four areas: updating the weighting factors, implementing a new classification system (ECOICOP v2), changing the base year to 2025, and differentiating the composition of products in the household basket.

The new household basket will include 850 goods and services, an increase of 45 compared to the previous one. 130 new goods and services will be added, while 85 will be removed, based on annual household expenditures.

The average annual household consumption expenditure for 2023 amounted to €43,263, recording an increase of 38.6% in nominal values compared to 2015/2016.

The Household Budget Survey (HBS) is conducted every five years and aims to revise the goods and services in the household basket, as well as to update the figures for estimating private consumption.
