Competitive Electricity Market in Cyprus: Staffing Shortages at the Transmission System Operator?
Share on:

Just weeks before the launch of the Competitive Electricity Market, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) is facing staffing shortages at its Control Center. Employees from the EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) are being asked to fill the gaps, potentially jeopardizing the smooth start of competition.

This delay raises doubts about the Market Operator's readiness to implement the European directive on impartiality. The Republic of Cyprus risks exposure to the European Union, while questions arise regarding the preferences of the Minister of Energy, Giorgos Papanastasiou.

Eleven EAC employees seconded to the TSO have refused to perform occasional work for the Competitive Market, citing workload, lack of experience, and conflict of interest. The disagreement had been apparent for weeks.

The TSO appears to be rushing to open the market while not ready, attempting to shift responsibilities to unqualified personnel. Recruitment is insufficient to cover needs due to departures and inadequate training.
