EAC Strike: Starts at Midnight – Risk of Escalation

A 24-hour strike at the EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) begins tonight at midnight, due to disagreements on key energy sector issues. Despite meetings between the Minister of Energy with the EAC management and unions, no substantial progress was made.
Key points of disagreement: Electricity sufficiency, natural gas import, utilization of production units, upgrading of the Dhekelia station, penetration into RES (Renewable Energy Sources), and state participation in the costs for generators.
EAC employees and management appear to agree on major issues, creating a united front. There is a risk of escalating strike measures, which would worsen the situation, especially in view of rising temperatures and marginal coverage of electricity demand.
Another point of contention is Cyta's expansion into the energy sector.
