Taxi Strike in Cyprus Over Illegal Taxis

The Pancyprian Urban Taxi Federation (POAT) is threatening an indefinite strike starting January 27th due to the increase in illegal taxis. POAT President, Ntinοs Konstantinou, stated that the problem has multiplied in the last five years, despite the 2024 legislation.
Taxi drivers are protesting insufficient policing and online platforms that employ private individuals. They are demanding stricter controls and public awareness campaigns. Taxi drivers in Limassol traveled to Larnaca to support their colleagues at the "Glafcos Clerides" airport.
Konstantinos Magdalinidis, President of the Larnaca District Committee (POAT), stated that the possibilities for dialogue have been exhausted and that they are demanding legality and justice. Taxi drivers in Paphos are also participating in the strike, denouncing piracy and uncontrolled practices.
Leonidas Kouris, President of the urban taxi drivers of Paphos airport, reported that intercity and rural taxis are operating illegally in urban areas. Taxi drivers are warning of escalating mobilizations in case of non-response from the authorities.
