Greek Professors at MIT Lead Nuclear Ship Safety Handbook

Greek professors at MIT are leading the creation of the first handbook for nuclear ship safety. The handbook, published by MIT in Boston, aims to fill a significant gap, as there has been no unified public document with guidelines for the safe design of civilian nuclear-powered ships.
The MIT Maritime Consortium, led by professors Themistoklis Sapsis and Foteini Christia, developed the handbook. Professor Sapsis stated that the handbook is a key tool for adopting nuclear energy in shipping.
The handbook covers areas where nuclear and maritime safety design decisions meet, aiming for a holistic approach. Professor Christia referred to the recent Memorandum of Understanding between the US and the UK for a nuclear ship maritime corridor.
The Consortium, founded in 2024, aims to reduce emissions, optimize ship operations, and enhance the competitiveness of the shipping industry.
Among the Greek shipping companies participating in the consortium are Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp., Delos Navigation LTD, Navios Maritime Partners L.P., and Dorian LPG.
