Successful Sea Trial for Greece-Cyprus Interconnector Cable

The sea trial for the submarine power cables of the Greece-Cyprus interconnector project, Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), was successfully completed west of Sicily, Italy. Nexans stated in a release that the trial alleviates «any concerns about the technical viability of the project.»
The company emphasized that the completion of the trial demonstrates that the cable can be safely installed and operated at depths of 3,000 meters. Given the scale and technical requirements of the GSI, the successful trial reinforces confidence in the project's implementation.
The specialized cable-laying vessel «Nexans Aurora» carried out the trial, simulating the installation conditions of the HVDC 525 kV submarine cable system. The process included the installation and retrieval of cable sections at a depth of 3,000 meters, followed by high-voltage electrical tests and visual inspection.
The data from the trial will undergo technical processing and evaluation, according to the project's quality assurance framework.
