Eurostat: Cyprus Ranks 14th in EU for Fire Protection Spending in 2023

According to Eurostat, Cyprus ranked 14th in the EU in 2023 regarding the percentage of general government expenditure on fire protection, with 0.4% of spending allocated for this purpose.
In 2023, Cyprus allocated €46.4 million for fire protection, equivalent to 0.4% of total government spending. The EU average was 0.5%. Romania had the highest percentage (0.9%), while Denmark had the lowest (0.1%).
Overall, EU member state governments spent €40.6 billion on fire protection services in 2023, marking an 8.5% increase compared to 2022.
Cyprus's percentage increased compared to 2022, when it allocated 0.3% of general government expenditure, or €38.7 million, for the same purpose.
Although Eurostat data for Cyprus in 2024 is characterized by "low reliability", Cyprus was reportedly in 6th place, along with Poland, in the percentage of firefighters relative to total employment, at 0.28%.
In 2024, 390,600 professional firefighters were employed in all EU member states, representing 0.19% of total employment in the EU.
