China is creating the world's largest shipbuilding group through the merger of two major state-owned shipyards, China State Shipbuilding (CSSC) and China Shipbuilding Industry.

The $16 billion merger will make the new company the world's largest listed shipbuilding company, with a broad range of activities. CSSC will absorb China Shipbuilding Industry and be listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

According to Bloomberg, the merged company aims to reduce costs and address the challenges posed by US trade policies. The two companies were separated in 1999 to promote competition, but Beijing is now seeking to consolidate state-owned enterprises in strategic sectors.

In addition to commercial vessels, CSSC is a major contractor to the Chinese Navy and built China's first aircraft carrier, the Shandong. The merger is expected to enhance the company's ability to meet the navy's needs for advanced equipment.

Matthew Funaiole, an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the merger is an important step for China's dominance in the global shipbuilding industry. The merged company's total order book amounts to over 530 ships, with annual revenues of approximately $18 billion.

The merger is also a response to US efforts to rebuild American shipyards.
