Halloumi PDO at Risk Due to Livestock Exports

Cypriot sheep and goat farming faces a crisis with mass sales of animals, mainly for export. This raises concerns about the sufficiency of sheep and goat milk for Halloumi PDO production.
Reportedly, approximately 1,500 sheep and goats are expected to be exported to Libya. In addition, the export of 500 animals for slaughter is being promoted, as well as 450 young cattle and 50 adult cows.
The incentive for farmers is the financial benefit, with prices reaching €500 per animal. The Veterinary Services confirm that profit is the main incentive due to adverse economic conditions.
The situation is complicated by the new subsidy strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture, which from 2025 will be based on milk productivity above 200 liters per animal.
Farmers are reacting, and there are concerns about undermining the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) of Halloumi if exports and slaughter continue.
