Social Pact for AI: Job Risks in the EU

The European Union faces increasing risks to employment, income, and social cohesion due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI). According to Social Europe, there is a need for a 'Social Pact' to address the impact of AI on the labor market.
The adoption of AI has increased significantly, with 78% of businesses using it in 2024, compared to 20% in 2017. Tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are accelerating automation, leading to potential job losses, particularly for younger employees.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warns that generative AI could eliminate up to half of entry-level jobs and increase unemployment by 10-20% within five years. Therefore, the creation of a European 'Social Pact for Artificial Intelligence' linked to the European Social Fund is proposed to protect workers and upgrade skills.
Key measures include developing social protection systems, supporting retraining, and promoting 'hybrid intelligence' – interpersonal, creative, and interdisciplinary skills. In addition, an industrial policy is needed to strengthen the EU's competitiveness in the field of AI.
The European Union is called upon to act collectively to ensure that the transition to AI is socially responsible and inclusive, protecting workers and regions from the negative impacts.
