EU Commission Announces New 'Mini' Car Category Up to 4.2 Meters

The European Commission has announced the creation of a new category of 'mini' cars with a length of up to 4.2 meters, following pressure from European automakers to counter Chinese competition.

The new category will be similar to the Japanese 'Kei' car category. These small electric cars will not have extensive equipment and advanced safety systems in order to reduce production costs. Prices are expected to range between 16,000 and 20,000 euros.

The European Commissioner for Welfare and Industrial Strategy, Stéphane Séjourné, stressed that the announcement, expected by December 10, will help European automakers to face Chinese competition and increase sales.

Stellantis, through its president, had pointed out the issue since June, arguing that this category would allow the production of small, affordable cars in Europe, according to Japanese standards.
