EU Commission Prepares Fertilizer Action Plan Amid Middle East Concerns

The European Commission is preparing an action plan for fertilizers amid concerns about the escalation in the Middle East, according to Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen.

Mr. Hansen warned that the fertilizer situation is expected to worsen this year due to developments in the region.

A high-level meeting with fertilizer producers and agricultural organizations will be held on April 13 to examine short-term and long-term measures. The goal is to support European fertilizer production, more efficient use of fertilizers, and the replacement of mineral fertilizers with organic and low-carbon alternatives.

Mr. Hansen noted that 70% of farmers have already purchased supplies from last year, but the problem will be more acute later in the year.
