Cyprus: Hotel Employees Threaten Strike – Employers Call for 'Wiser Thoughts'

Hotel employees are standing firm on their announced strike measures, citing the non-implementation of agreed terms in July's payroll. The General Secretary of SYXKA-PEO, Neophytos Timinis, stated that hoteliers must implement the agreements to avoid the measures.
The President of the Cyprus Tourism Enterprises Association (CTEA), Akis Vavlitis, called for 'wiser thoughts' and referred to the Department of Labour Relations for any violations. Mr. Timinis raised the issue of unfair competition among hotel units.
According to Mr. Timinis, several dozen small hotel units are not implementing the agreement, while complaints to the Department of Labour Relations concern 4-5 large groups, employing 35-40% of hotel employees.
Mr. Vavlitis described the prospect of strike measures as 'unfortunate' and stated that complaints to the Department of Labour Relations concern fewer than ten hotels. He also noted the staff shortage in the industry, suggesting that employees can easily move to other businesses.
Trade unions and employers are in negotiations to resolve the issue, aiming to avoid strike action.
