Xylofagou Quarries Closed: Warning of Escalation

The three quarries in Xylofagou, within the British Bases of Dhekelia, suspended operations on Thursday. The companies Skyrothrafstiki etaireia Kaos ltd, Iakovou Bros (constructions) quarrying operations LTD and M.E.L (Moumouris Etaireia Latomeion) have been requesting the expansion of the quarrying area since 2018.

The companies warn of escalating measures as reserves dwindle and jobs are threatened. In a statement, they emphasize that their operation supports over 60 families and the economy of the free Famagusta area.

The quarries' requests include immediate approval of the extension, approval to start preliminary work, and the allocation of a new area.

A meeting with the Association of Quarry Owners will be held today to discuss the next steps.
