Larnaca Port: Lack of Crane Operators Disrupts Operations
Share on:

Larnaca Port is facing serious operational issues due to a shortage of crane operators, sparking reactions from animal feed importers. In a letter to the Ministry of Transport, importers express their outrage at the situation following the departure of KITION company.

Mr. Giorgos Katodrytis, on behalf of AGS Agrotrading Ltd, states that there are only two crane operators for five cranes, while 20 people are needed for full operation. This leads to delays and increased costs, with compensation to shipowners reaching $5,000 per day.

Importers suspect that the degradation of the port is intentional, with the aim of privatizing it. They demand immediate recruitment of personnel and a clear timetable of actions.

The president of EBEL, Nakis Antoniou, stated that initiatives have been taken and the return of a crane operator trainer from ANETEL is expected on September 1, 2025. The Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, confirmed that instructions were given to purchase crane operator services through ANETEL.

Importers point out that the lack of personnel makes it impossible to staff the machines, resulting in reduced productivity and increased costs.

A meeting with TAIPED is expected to discuss the utilization and upgrading of the port and marina infrastructure.
