MECROSUR: New Challenges and Opportunities for Cypriot Agriculture
Share on:

The MECROSUR agreement, which transforms Latin America into a production hub for agricultural products for Europe, creates new realities. Konstantinos Loizou, CEO of EMBIO Diagnostics, analyzes the implications and suggests ways to capitalize on opportunities for Cyprus.

Mr. Loizou believes that Cyprus, despite its small size, can emerge as a leading force in the technology of exporting, processing, and tracing agricultural products. He suggests focusing on tools that transform raw materials into trust, quality, and value.

Cyprus has flexibility in digital business, the ability to rapidly implement policies, and experience in quality services, as well as access to technology and space infrastructure. Creating a traceability and processing system will give producers access to markets and better prices, while guaranteeing consumers safety and information.

It is proposed that Cyprus become a regional center for traceability, processing, and export technologies for agricultural products within the next four years. To achieve this, institutional adaptation, targeted pilot projects, public-private partnerships, a clear legal framework, and training programs are needed.

Mr. Loizou calls on IDEK, the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation, the Government, producers, and businesses to take action, proposing the formation of an inter-ministerial team and the launch of pilot projects.
