Youth in Cyprus: Leaving Home After 27 – Above the European Average

According to Eurostat data, Cyprus records one of the highest rates of young people staying at home, with an average departure age of 27.2 years, above the EU average of 26.2 years.
At the same time, Cyprus has one of the lowest rates of housing cost burden in the EU. Only 2.8% of young people aged 15-29 live in households that spend more than 40% of their income on housing.
The highest rates of staying at home are recorded in Croatia (31.3 years), Slovakia (30.9 years) and Greece (30.7 years), while the lowest are in Finland (21.4 years), Denmark (21.7 years) and Sweden (21.9 years).
At the EU level, 9.7% of young people live in households with high housing costs, while the corresponding rate for the total population is 8.2%. Greece (30.3%) and Denmark (28.9%) have the highest rates of housing cost overburden.
Cyprus combines the tendency of young people to stay at home with low housing costs, offering a relatively favorable picture compared to other European countries.
